Dramaturgical Notes
The dramaturgy research behind The Fire Inside focused on three core sections that were key to the show. These sections were the historical and fairy tale influences on the show, exploring the original Sleeping Beauty myth, and the historical time period in which it is set. The second part of the research focused on the gender and sexuality issues that are brought up within the show, such as feminism, rape culture, and what it means to be a women in a world that has rejected you. The final part of the dramaturgy research centered sexuality, both in terms of what society teaches and for the characters within the show. The research came out of many conversations between Savannah and I about what the show needed, and what issues felt most important to address within the show. The research presented here also serves as a companion guide for the show itself, to help the audience better understand the roots of the show.
